For 25 years, Jay Reinstein enjoyed serving in local government, working in leadership positions in several cities across North Carolina including Durham and Fayetteville. Most recently, he was the Assistant City Manager of Fayetteville, overseeing the Budget and Finance departments, Transit department, Development Services, Economic and Workforce Development department, and Human Relations. About five years ago, at age 58, Mr. Reinstein was officially diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He decided to use the disease as a platform to raise awareness, develop public policy, and raise funds for Alzheimer’s research, and to date has raised over $200,000. He got involved with speaking engagements and advocacy work through his local Alzheimer’s Association chapter. He was selected to serve as a member of the Alzheimer’s Association National Board of Directors and was named the National Advocate of the Year for the Alzheimer's Association in 2023. In 2023 he was appointed Vice Chair of the Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP), a team developed by the United Kingdom's Alzheimer's Society as part of the $5.2 million Longitude Prize on Dementia. Mr. Reinstein has been quoted or profiled in articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Politico, Bloomberg News, and Parade Magazine. He received both his bachelor’s degree and a Master of Public Administration from North Carolina Central University and currently lives in Durham.
